What to Expect & How to Make the Most of This Special Time
If you’ve never had professional photos taken before—or even if you have—it can feel a bit daunting knowing what to expect from a maternity session. And with every photographer having their own approach, it’s completely normal to have a few questions.
My maternity sessions are gentle, relaxed, and completely tailored to you. No studio lights, no awkward poses—just real, heartfelt moments captured in a way that feels natural and meaningful.
Whether it’s just you and your bump, your partner, or your growing family—this is your moment to pause amidst the preparations, celebrate your journey, and connect with the new life growing inside you.
Let’s dive into what to expect and how to get the most out of your maternity session.
When Should I Book?
I always recommend booking your maternity session as early as possible—especially if you’re hoping for a specific season, date, or location. My calendar fills up quickly, and I hate having to turn people away!
The ideal time to have your session is between 28–34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully visible, but you’re (hopefully!) still feeling comfortable enough to move around with ease.
Where Will the Session Be?
No sterile studios here! We’ll choose a location that reflects your personality and feels safe and comfortable for you. Some favourites include:
Your home – cozy, personal, and perfect for quiet moments
The beach – soft light, open space, sandy toes
A park or woodland – peaceful, earthy, and full of seasonal colour
I’ll help guide you in choosing the perfect spot, depending on the time of year and the feel you want. Whether you imagine soft golden light, wind in your hair, or snuggles on the sofa with your toddler—we’ll make it happen.
How Long Does It Take?
Maternity sessions usually last up to an hour, although it can vary slightly—especially if little ones are involved. We always leave space for cuddles, snacks, and a bit of flexibility.
Please arrive a little early to park, settle in, and get into the flow without feeling rushed.
Who Should Come?
Anyone you’d love to have in the photos—whether it’s just you, your partner, older siblings, or all of you together.
Please only bring those who are going to be in the pictures, as extra people can be a distraction and make it harder for you to relax into the moment.
What Should I Bring?
You don’t need to bring much—but here are a few thoughtful items that can help:
A neutral blanket – great for sitting, wrapping up in, or using as a prop
Snacks and water, especially for little ones
Comfort items or toys for toddlers
Comfortable season-appropriate clothing, and a change of outfit if you’d like a different look
And maybe a hairbrush or clip, in case the wind wants to play!
What Should I Wear?
Styling is such an important part of your session—it can truly elevate your images from lovely to breathtaking. Once you’re booked in, I’ll send you my Styling Guide, which includes inspiration, colour palettes, and lots of practical tips for dressing the bump (and the rest of the family too!).
Soft, flowing fabrics work beautifully—especially dresses that move with the breeze or wrap gently around your bump. Think natural tones, earthy colours, and textures that feel timeless.
Not sure what works best? I’m always happy to help—send me a message on Instagram or WhatsApp, and we can plan something together.
✨ Bonus: I’ve also written a detailed blog post all about what to wear—check it out here!
When Will I Receive My Photos?
You’ll receive your private online gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session. From there, you can download, share, and even order beautiful handmade prints and frames directly.
I’ve sourced a range of locally crafted products that complement the warm, neutral style of your session—and make perfect keepsakes for your home or nursery.
What If It Rains?
Don’t worry—outdoor sessions are weather dependent, and if it’s raining or just not looking ideal, we’ll simply reschedule to another day that works for us both. Your comfort is key, and I always leave room in my calendar for these changes.
How do you create such natural images? During our pregnancies there are very few times in life when we are completely switched off from the outside world and totally present with our baby – make this one of those moments! Take this time to bond, be present and capture your baby bump, so you can remember just how it felt to have that little bubba growing away.
If older siblings are going to included in your maternity shoot– be up for doing silly things, playing games and having fun. The best sessions are the ones where mum and dad get involved, creating all those natural moments that we love.
Ready to Book?
I hope this helped answer your questions and eased any nerves about what to expect from your maternity session. If you’re ready to capture this beautiful chapter with warmth, heart, and honesty—I’d be honoured to photograph your story.
