Newborn Photography Styling Dorset

Creating Cosy Textures & Connection in Your Newborn Imagery
There’s something about the newborn stage that just calls for softness.
Soft light.
Soft blankets.
Soft voices.
Soft, sleepy stretches and tiny fingers curled around yours.
When it comes to newborn photography, styling is at the heart of everything I do. Not in a fussy, over-the-top way — but in a thoughtful, intentional way. For me, it’s not just about taking photographs. It’s about setting the scene for your story to unfold.
I get genuinely excited about pairing together warm tones and beautiful textures. Linen against skin. Chunky knits. Neutral wraps. The way natural light falls across your sofa. All those little details that make your images feel cosy, calm and timeless.
Because the real focus?
Isn’t the props.
Isn’t the trends.
It’s your baby. Their tiny features. And the way you look at them.
Why I Always Lean Towards Neutrals
I’m naturally drawn to soft, muted tones — creamy whites, oatmeals, warm greys, gentle browns. These colours photograph beautifully in natural light and, more importantly, they don’t distract from what matters.
They also mean your images will sit perfectly on your walls for years to come.
No bold patterns that date.
No bright colours pulling attention.
Just timeless, love-filled imagery that feels like home.
And if you’re one of my lovely Parkstone or Lilliput mamas with a warm, neutral home? These tones blend seamlessly into your space 🤍
“What Should We Wear?”
This is the question I get asked the most — and I promise, it doesn’t need to feel overwhelming.
The easiest place to start?
Look around your home.
What colours are already there? Your sofa, your walls, your cushions? Your outfits should complement your surroundings, not fight against them.
As a general rule:
✔ Soft, muted tones work best
✔ Think creams, beige, soft browns, gentle greys
✔ Simple over patterned
✖ Avoid bright colours or heavy prints
If your partner or older children are joining, just make sure your outfits all sit nicely together. They don’t need to match — just harmonise.
Texture Is Everything
You can create so much interest without loud colours simply by layering texture.
Think:
Chunky knit jumpers
Floaty dresses
Soft cardigans
Linen shirts
Cosy blankets
Blankets are honestly one of my favourite “props” (although they never feel like props). They can be sat on, wrapped around baby, draped over your lap if you’re feeling a little self-conscious — they add warmth and softness instantly.
And when you’re in those early days, a little extra comfort goes a long way.
You Don’t Need to Be “Photo Ready”
I want to say this clearly.
You do not need to feel perfectly put together to have beautiful photos.
The newborn days are tender and tiring. You might be running on broken sleep. You might still be healing. You might not feel like “yourself” yet.
That’s okay.
Go for floaty, comfortable clothing. Loose dresses. Soft jumpers. Something you can breathe and cuddle in. You want to look like you — just the cosiest version.
(And yes… it is absolutely a good excuse to buy that floaty dress you’ve had saved in your basket.)
What About Baby?
You don’t need to prepare much at all.
I always bring my carefully curated selection of:
Neutral wraps
Soft blankets
Simple, timeless props
For baby, one or two neutral outfits is perfect. Plain vests are often more than enough. Sometimes bare skin and a wrap is all we need.
Because again — it’s about connection, not complication.
It’s About How It Feels
More than anything, I want your newborn session to feel calm.
No rushing.
No pressure.
No worrying about whether your home is “perfect” (it doesn’t need to be).
We’ll use the light that’s there. We’ll move gently through the space. We’ll focus on the cuddles, the feeds, the little in-between moments that you don’t even realise are magic yet.
Creating cosy textures is just the backdrop.
The real beauty is the bond.
