What to wear to your maternity session
I often get asked the same question from my mamas to-be before their maternity photography session, “what should I wear?!”
This is SUPER important – it’s the difference between an average and an AMAZING shoot! It’s important to choose the right outfit, as this can make a huge difference to your photography session and the final images.
Colour Palette
When choosing your colour palette, think first about the location you have chosen. If you are having a beach session then often soft blue tones can work really well with the sea & sand tones. If you are having your maternity session at home, you want your clothes to compliment your surroundings.
As a general rule soft muted tones work best, I would always avoid anything too bright or too heavily patterned. Try to avoid any clothing with logos or characters etc, this type of clothing can be very distracting in your final images. A plain white or beige dress or shirt would work much better.
If your partner or older children are going to be in the images also, do your outfit colours all compliment one another?
You can add texture and interest to your outfit by layering with jumpers, cardigans or scarves. Simple fashion jewellery can add a nice extra little detail also.
Maybe bring along your favourite blanket as a prop. This can be used to sit on or wrap around yourselves for a cosy and intimate cuddle!
Consider Your Home
Your printed images will be displayed in your home, so think about the colour schemes in your home decor. Choose outfits that will compliment these colours when displayed on your wall.
Dress Up!
You want to look like you- but on a really good day! Dont be afraid to wear something a little more dressy than usual. This can be a great excuse to buy that floaty dress you have been eyeing up!
Most of my outdoor sessions are very relaxed, on the beach or somewhere like a country park. I would recommend to stay away from high heels, strappy sandals are great or even barefoot with your toes in the sand!
Most Importantly Be Yourself…
You want to feel as comfortable as possible, so that you look happy & relaxed in the images. If you wear something that is totally out of your comfort zone you will feel too self conscious to relax and enjoy yourself!
If you are unsure then bring along as many outfits as you like, we can have a little look together and pick something that makes you feel a million bucks!
Fancy some shopping?
A couple of my favourite shops to buy clothes from are H&M, Zara & Asos. Here are some great examples from each, of some outfits that would look amazing on a maternity photo shoot! Muted colour tones and floaty textures are always comfortable and look great!
And remember you don’t have to buy from a specific ‘maternity’ range, as long as the outfit has some float or stretch to allow for your growing bump then that is all you need. Also places like Vinted are great if you are looking to grab a second hand bargain- you really don’t need to spend a fortune to look & feel amazing at your maternity photography session xx
