Tried and Tested: My Top 5 Easy Toddler Activities (That Actually Work)
Having two boys of my own, I’ve tried a lot of toddler activities over the years.
Some were big wins… others? Total flops.
There were times I’d spend ages setting something up—only for them to lose interest in five minutes (or worse, not at all). It’s frustrating, especially when you’ve made a mess or put real effort in.
So here’s what I’ve learned: simplicity is key.
The best toddler activities are the easy ones. Quick to set up, low on mess, and fun for your little one if they’re in the mood—because let’s face it, toddlers are unpredictable at the best of times!
Now that I’m back in the toddler stage with my youngest, Bowie (almost two), I thought I’d share five of our favourite tried-and-tested toddler activities. These are the ones that have stood the test of time in our house—and the best part? They only take minutes to set up.
1. Toy Rescue
Grab a bit of cardboard and some masking tape, and stick down a selection of small toys (like cars, dinosaurs, or animals). Your toddler gets the fun job of pulling the tape off and “rescuing” the toys.
Simple, satisfying, and surprisingly entertaining!
2. Stickers on Paper
Most toddlers love stickers. Just hand them a sheet of stickers and a plain piece of paper, and let them go wild.
Top tip: Peel off the white edging around the stickers before giving it to them—this makes it so much easier for little fingers to grab them.
3. Playdoh & Pasta
This combo is always a hit with my two. Add pasta shapes or spaghetti to your Playdoh set-up for some creative play (and more staying power). They can build, poke, squish, and even make pasta shakers using the empty Playdoh pots!
My 2- and 5-year-old both love this—and anything that entertains them both at once is a win in my book.
4. Animal Swim
Fill a low container or tuff tray with a couple of inches of water and pop in some small plastic animals. Add in bowls, spoons, or even bubbles for extra fun.
It’s simple water play that can stretch out for ages—plus it’s great for sensory development.
5. Colour Block Sorting
This one’s so easy. Use coloured blocks (like Duplo) and place them around scribbled pieces of coloured paper or card. Your toddler matches the blocks to the correct colour.
Start with 3 or 4 colours to keep things simple. No need to be artistic—scribbles are perfect!
A Few Mum-to-Mum Tips
-
Set it up and walk away.
I often find it works best to set something up and leave it for them to discover. No pressure, no persuading—just a quiet “this looks interesting” moment they can choose to explore. -
Every child plays differently.
My eldest wasn’t into stickers or colour sorting—but he loved imagination play. It’s all about finding what yourchild enjoys. The Toy Rescue and Animal Swim were perfect for him. -
Don’t get sucked into Pinterest-perfect crafts.
There are so many ideas out there, but don’t let that overwhelm you. The best activities are the ones that are simple and low-effort—so if your child isn’t into it, it’s no big deal.
I hope this gives you a few easy ideas to try with your little one—especially on those long afternoons when you’re running low on energy or inspiration. Whether it buys you five minutes or twenty, sometimes that’s all you need.
And if nothing else, it’s always nice to have a few mess-free tricks up your sleeve. 💛
Let me know if you try any—and feel free to share your own go-to toddler activity ideas in the comments!
