Preparing for your second baby

Preparing for your second baby?

Although having a second baby is a really exciting time, it can also bring some anxiety and questions around growing from a family of three to four…

How will your eldest get on with being a big sibling? How will you manage with a newborn and a toddler? Will the baby wake your eldest in the night? Will they feel left out?

It can all feel a little unknown & every family is different! But from my own experience having a second baby did bring some new challenges but equally, some things were actually easier second time around…

As a second time mum you will have a greater confidence, have more experience and trust your own instincts a lot easier. And quite honestly, there is absolutely nothing better than seeing your two babies together for the first time and the love your eldest has for their tiny sibling- your heart might just actually explode!

One big unknown for me was how could I possibly love and have room in my heart for another child, when it felt as though that space was already taken! I couldn’t comprehend how another child would fit into our lives. The answer was that yes my first baby would always be my first but that we grow and adapt just the same way I did when I first became a mum and that love isn’t finite, it grows and adapts also.

The quote below is one for me that perfectly sums up the love you have for your second child, especially if they are going to be your last… (please be warned tissues may be needed for this one)!

“You’re not my first, that much is true. I loved another before loving you. I’m a different mother this time around. More calm and confident I’ve found. Since you came, there’s a new dimension. Two children now want my attention. I was so excited first time around. This time I want to slow things down. Your ‘firsts’ will all be ‘lasts’ for me. Last crawl and last to ride my knee. You were not my firstborn, this is true, but the last child I will have is you. You’re the last lullaby I’ll ever sing. And ‘lasts’ are a special kind of thing.”
