Five Helpful Tips For a First Time Mum

As a newborn and family photographer and a mother myself, I have spent a lot of time with other mothers and in particular first time mums. In this post I have put together a mix of information and essential top tips for a first time mum, to empower and support you on your journey into motherhood.

Whether you are in the early stages of pregnancy or have recently welcomed your little one, there are some of the unique challenges and uncertainties that accompany becoming a mother for the first time. Hopefully this can be a great resource and help with the adjustment to this new chapter in your life xx

1. Establish a support network: Surround yourself with friends, family, or other moms who can provide guidance, assistance, and emotional support. In those early days just knowing you are not alone and others have walked the same path can be very reassuring. Baby groups and mum coffee mornings can be great for meeting new mum friend

2. Prioritise self-care: Take time for yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes each day. Rest, eat well, and engage in activities that bring you joy to maintain your well-being. It’s amazing how just a five minute shower can reset your mood. Or an hour to catch up with a friend with a cup of tea (without baby if possible).

3. Be flexible and patient: Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, and every baby is unique. Embrace flexibility, learn to adapt, and be patient with both yourself and your baby as you navigate the challenges. Please be kind to yourself, motherhood is a journey and nobody really knows what they are doing, we are just trying our best, which is enough.

4. Trust your instincts: You know your baby better than anyone else. Trust your instincts and build confidence in your ability to care for and understand your little one. Mummy instincts really are usually right. You will be given a huge amount of advice from all the people around you, but its up to you which parts you choose to listen to and use. You and your baby are on your own personal path.

5. Accept help when offered: Don’t hesitate to accept assistance from others, whether it’s help with chores, meals, or babysitting. Taking care of yourself allows you to be a better caregiver for your baby. Nobody wins if you try do do it all yourself, if others want to help then let them, always say yes!

Remember that there is no one size fits all approach. Trust your instincts and seek support when needed. Cherish the moments no matter how small. Im so excited for you to embark on this newfound role and the life changing journey that lies ahead!
