What to expect at your family session

What to Expect & How to Prepare for a Session That Feels Like You
I know that booking a family photography session—especially if it’s your first time—can bring up a lot of questions. What will it be like? Will the kids behave? What if it rains? What should we wear?
Even if you’ve had professional photos before, every photographer’s style and approach is different. So let me walk you through exactly what to expect from a family session with me—relaxed, playful, and full of natural moments that reflect the beautiful chaos of real family life.
As a mum of two little boys, I get it—life with kids is never still or perfect. But that’s exactly where the magic lives. These moments may feel messy, loud, or a little wild, but they’re yours—and they deserve to be remembered just as they are.

When to Book
Spring and Summer are definitely my busiest seasons—there’s something about golden light, beach barefoot moments, and long evenings that just works so beautifully.
If you’re dreaming of a golden hour beach session, summer is ideal. But don’t overlook early Autumn either! The sunsets are earlier (great for younger kids), and the rich warm tones of fallen leaves and quieter beaches are dreamy for family portraits.
Think about the vibe and colours you’d love for your walls:
-
Spring – fresh greens, florals, bright light
-
Summer – golden glow, long days, sandy toes
-
Autumn – earthy tones, cosy layers, rich textures
Where Will the Session Be?
Forget stiff studios—my sessions are all about connection, freedom, and being in spaces that feel like you.
We can shoot in:
-
The comfort of your own home (perfect for younger children)
-
A favourite woodland walk
-
Your go-to beach spot
-
A quiet field full of daisies or wildflowers
All sessions take place within Dorset, and if you’re not sure on the perfect location, I’ll happily make suggestions based on your family and the look you’re after.
How Long Will It Take?
Family sessions usually take around an hour, but I don’t rush the process. Some children need a little time to warm up, and that’s totally okay. We go at your family’s pace. I allow buffer time before and after so you’re never stressed about being “on the clock.”
Who Can Come?
Sessions are best when it’s just the people who’ll be in the photos. No extra guests, so you can fully relax and immerse yourself in the experience without distraction.
What If My Kids Don’t Cooperate?
Good news—you don’t have to make them “behave”!
I never expect kids to sit still or pose. In fact, I’d rather they didn’t.
We’ll run, play, explore and embrace their curiosity. I tailor the session to their unique personalities and interests. Sometimes that looks like peekaboo behind trees, jumping waves, or tickle fights in the sand. Whatever gets those natural giggles and cuddles.
What Should We Bring?
-
Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are great!)
-
A neutral blanket to sit on, wrap up in, or swing the kids
-
Snacks and water—especially for little ones
-
Maybe a favourite toy or comfort item
-
For beach sessions—feel free to go barefoot, or bring sandals if preferred
-
And most importantly—yourselves, ready to relax and have fun!
What Should We Wear?
Styling can make such a difference to how your images look and feel. Once you’re booked in, I’ll send you my detailed Styling Guide, filled with tips, inspiration, and outfit ideas for the whole family.
Think neutral tones, textures, and complementary palettes. If you ever get stuck, I’m just a message away and love helping clients with this!
When Will We See Our Photos?
You’ll receive your online gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session. From there, you can download your images, share them with family and friends, and browse my selection of prints and handcrafted frames.
I offer beautiful, locally made products that will suit any home and preserve your memories for years to come.
What If It Rains?
All outdoor sessions are weather-dependent. If the forecast isn’t looking great, I’ll be in touch to reschedule for a better day—no stress, no pressure. I always leave room in my calendar for these little changes.
How Do You Get Such Natural Images?
The secret? Just be present.
Put your phone away. Forget the “perfect” smile.
Laugh. Tickle. Chase. Cuddle.
This is your time to be with your family—not to perform, not to impress, just to connect. The most beautiful photos happen when you let go and lean in. Let’s create memories that feel like your family—not a version of it for Instagram.
Ready to Book?
I hope this has answered any questions you had and given you a feel for what your session might look like. If you’re ready to capture your family in a way that’s real, relaxed and truly you—I’d love to hear from you.
