How to Prepare for Your In Home Newborn Session

Bringing a newborn into your world is one of the most intimate, fleeting experiences you’ll ever have, and those first few weeks are such a beautiful blur of snuggles, tiny yawns, and endless love. That’s why an in home newborn session is so special—it allows me to capture your family in the space where you’re creating those memories, surrounded by all the details that tell your unique story.

To help you make the most of our time together, here’s a little guide to preparing for your session, so you can relax, soak in the moment, and enjoy every second with your new baby.

1. Timing Is Everything

The best time to schedule your session is when your baby is between 5-14 days old. At this age, they’re still super sleepy and curly, which means we can capture those gorgeous, peaceful moments. That said, every baby is different, so if we need to adjust the session date slightly, I’m always flexible.

We’ll work around your baby’s natural rhythm—there’s no rush, no stress. My goal is to document this beautiful chapter of your life, however it unfolds.

2. A Light Touch on Tidying

Your home doesn’t need to look like a show home for the sessi

on. In fact, the beauty of an in-home session is capturing your life exactly as it is. If there are a few areas you’d like to highlight—perhaps the nursery, your bedroom, or a favourite corner—just tidy them up lightly. We’re not aiming for perfection, we’re capturing your life as it is right now, with all its charm and personality.

I’ll often move things around to find the best light or backdrop, so don’t worry if everything isn’t picture-perfect from the start.

3. Natural Light is Key

Natural light makes everything softer, more intimate, and utterly beautiful, so if you can, open the curtains and let that lovely daylight stream in. The living room, bedroom, and nursery often have the best light, but we can adjust on the day if needed.

If your home has darker spaces, that’s not a problem—I’ll work with what we have to ensure everything looks stunning. It’s all part of the process.

4. Warm and Cosy is Best

Babies love to be warm, and keeping the room nice and cosy helps them feel settled and comfortable. I recommend turning up the thermostat a little or using a space heater to keep the environment just right. This helps your little one stay peaceful and relaxed, which is perfect for those sleepy, dreamy shots.

5. Simple, Timeless Outfits

When it comes to choosing outfits, less is more. Soft, neutral tone

s are ideal, as they allow your baby to be the focus without any distractions. Earthy colours, creams, and soft pastels work beautifully. Avoid bold patterns or logos—timeless and natural is the way to go.

For the baby, a simple onesie or soft swaddle is perfect. I also bring along a selection of wraps and blankets to use, but if you have any personal items, I’d love to include those too.

6. A Full Tummy Helps

A well-fed baby is a content, sleepy baby, so feeding your little one just before the session will help them feel relaxed. But remember, this is a completely unhurried process. If yo

ur baby needs to feed during the session or has a little fussy moment, we’ll take a break and let them settle.

Everything is at your baby’s pace—we’re not on the clock, and those pauses often create the sweetest, most natural moments to capture.

7. Involve the Whole Family

Your newborn may be the star, but the magic of these sessions is capturing your family’s connection. Siblings, pets, and parents are all a part of the story, and I love to document those first tender

moments together. Whether it’s a sibling giving a gentle kiss or a quiet moment of your baby resting in your arms, those are the moments that will stay with you forever.

If siblings (or pets!) aren’t quite in the mood, don’t worry—we’ll take it slow and let them come around in their own time. Candid, natural interactions are often the most beautiful.

8. Relax and Enjoy the Experience

Most importantly, this session is about you and your family—there’s no pressure to perform, no need to worry about how things “should” go. I’m here to capture the love and connection between you all, exactly as it is.

You don’t need to worry about a thing—just be present with your b

aby and let the moments unfold naturally. These photos will reflect your family’s story, capturing all the emotion and beauty of this incredible time in your life.

Your in home newborn session is a wonderful opportunity to preserve these precious early moments. With a relaxed atmosphere, a few simple preparations, and plenty of love, we’ll create a collection of images that will become cherished memories for years to come.

So, take a deep breath, enjoy your time with your little one, and trust that we’ll capture something truly magical together.
