How to Prompt Real Emotion (Not Just Posed Smiles) in Family Sessions
You know that moment during family sessions where everyone’s smiling—but it just doesn’t feel real? It’s a nice photo, but it’s missing that spark, that connection that makes you stop and feel something.
That’s because the best family photos aren’t about getting everyone to look at the camera and smile at the same time. They’re about capturing real relationships—love, playfulness, chaos, calm—and everything in between.
Here’s how I prompt those natural, heartfelt moments in my sessions (without asking anyone to “say cheese” 😅):
1. Start With Movement
If I had to give one tip to break the tension quickly, it’s this: get everyone moving.
Some of my go-to prompts:
“Hold hands and run towards me like you’re on a mission.”
“Pick up the littlest one and do a big spin!”
“Let’s see who can walk in a straight line while bumping hips—no laughing allowed. (Just kidding, laughing is mandatory!)”
It helps everyone loosen up, especially the kids—and it’s usually when the giggles start.
2. Use Prompts That Invite Connection
Instead of stiff poses, I guide families with prompts that bring out real emotion.
A few that always work:
“Can you whisper your favourite thing about Mum in her ear?”
“Everyone look at the person who makes you laugh the most.”
“Let’s do the world’s biggest group cuddle—squeeze tight!”
I’m not looking for perfection. I’m looking for you—as you are, together.
3. Let the Kids Take the Lead
This one’s huge. If a little one wants to run, twirl, pick flowers, or climb all over Mum—let them. Some of the best photos happen when kids are just being kids. I always tell parents not to stress if their children aren’t “behaving”—this isn’t about getting them to sit still, it’s about capturing who they are.
Plus, letting children lead helps everyone relax. The energy shifts, and the magic happens.
4. Leave Room for the Quiet Moments Too
It’s not all running and laughing. Some of the most beautiful, emotional moments come when we slow down.
Sometimes I’ll say:
“Just close your eyes for a moment and breathe each other in.”
“Wrap them up and hold them close—no rush, just stay there.”
“Forget I’m here—this is your moment.”
You’d be amazed what can happen in the stillness. Those little forehead kisses, that deep breath, that quiet connection? That’s the gold.
5. Trust Yourself to Read the Room
There’s no one-size-fits-all with families. Some need lots of direction; others just need space to unfold naturally. Over time, you learn to read the energy, adjust your pace, and know when to gently guide—or when to simply watch it all unfold.
Connection Over Perfection, Always.
Real moments don’t need to be posed. They just need a safe, relaxed space to show up in—and a photographer who knows how to gently bring them out.
So if you ever feel stuck behind the camera, remember: Focus on how it feels, not how it looks. Emotion will always outlast a perfect smile.
